Dr. Haiyang Li is H. Joe Nelson III Professor of Strategic Management and Innovation at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University. He earned a Bachelor and a Master in economics from Renmin University of China and received a Ph.D. from City University of Hong Kong. Before joining Rice University, he was on the faculty of Department of Management at Texas A&M University.

Dr. Li’s research interests focus on technology entrepreneurship, innovation (particularly in China’s transition economy), digital transformation, strategic alliances and multinational firms’ innovation in emerging markets, as well as the growth of technology clusters. His articles on the above issues have appeared in Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Marketing, Organization Science, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Management and Organization Review, and others.

His research has won awards including the Grief Research Impact Awards (2016) and AMA Winter Marketing Educators’ Conference Best Paper Award (2001). He also won EFMD Case Writing Competition Award (Bringing technology to market category) (2016).

Dr. Li is the co-founding editor of Quarterly Journal of Management, a top-tier Chinese management journal in China. He has also served on the editorial review boards of multiple journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Journal of High Technology Management Research, International Journal of Emerging Markets, and Multinational Business Review. He is a keen supporter of the profession through his membership of several professional associations including Academy of Management (AOM), Strategic Management Society (SMS), and International Association of Chinese Management Research (IACMR).

This annual award (launched in 2007) recognizes an entrepreneurship paper that appeared in the top-tier management and entrepreneurship journals six years ago and received the highest citations (based on the Social Science Citations Index) in the five years following publication.
